POEMA SEM TÍTULO

1984

From:  (p. 182-184):

The "ready-made poem" is nothing more than this encounter in commonplace facts with something that extrapolates its quotidian function, dislocating it from its

"habitat" (as in Jose Paulo Paes' steet-sign poem), causing it to act in montage with the new context that receives it. In "Clichetes" (cover; figure 30)" in the symbol of masticated consumerism, we can see an ironically disguised hammer and sickle, stylized in the "C" of "Chicletes" that becomes "Cliches," demonstrating the strength of humorous estrangement in montage intersign poetry.

Montage, as in the anecdote and the cartoon, is seen in information which is usually not raised to a predictable whole. The "wit" resides in the superimposition of an unlikely fact on a predictable informational conjunction, given that this suggests a feeling of irony or the grotesque. Guimaraes Rosa* himself captures the fundamental difference between the wit of a cartoon and that of a poem. The following phrase could as well refer to the cartoon: "an 'anecdote' is like a match: blown out, extinguished, the servant died." To the closure of the anecdote's wit is counterposed the wit of found poems:

"Perhaps the anecdote serves even the other/ already used up function, as a way of induction or, for example, as an instrument of analysis of the traits of poetry and its transcendence. The word 'wit/' for some reason, retains the meanings of joke, supernatural talent (gift), charm" (my emphases)**."

"Ready-made poems" and witty montage present in intersign montage poetry act, then, to produce meanings that are projected on the complex of social informa-

tion, confronting the rules of reading and the modes of ratiocination, confirming Guimaraes Rosa's point that; "in the practice of art, comicality and humor act as catalyzers or sensibilizers of spiritual allegory and of the non-proisaic, a truth we confer in every sense.**"

The unexpected information enriches and creates various interpretations of the message, densifying the meaning to the point of seeming to approximate non-

sense, the degree zero of language. However, here unusual information, at the limits of the absurd, sends us to a non-sense that "reflects by the skin of its teeth the coherence of a general mystery which surrounds and creates us. Life also is to be read. Not literally, but in its super-sense. And people, for the time being, read life only by distorting the lines.****"
