THIAGO DE MELLO

“The poetry of Thiago de Mello shows his engagement with the dramas and challenges of his epoch. Thiago is one of those few poets in whom biography and work interweave, creating one organic  whole. His books are evocative pictures of an itinerary through existence and poetry.  Several times the poet was forced to struggle, to exile himself; he is a fighter who was always faithful to his principles, to his truth and his chimeras. He used poetry as his trade, and in literature he found the justification for his life. On the other hand, he made himself through poetry. It is significant that, forced to choose between the security of a stable profession and the material insecurity of those who live by writing verse, he chose poetry.”

“After na initial phase of predominantly lyrical poetry, Thiago de Mello, the famous Brazilian poet, became popular mainly for the poems inspired by his política activity against the military regime installed in Brazil in 1964. During that period he took refuge first in Chile, where he saw the downfall of Salvador Allende, and later, living as a political refugee, in Germany, France and Portugal. Returning to Brasil, he decided  to settle in his native land, on the margin of the wide Amazon river, and became a defender of the equatorial rainforest, its fauna and flora menaced by predatory over-exploration. From Barreirinha he travels often to many parts of Brazil and Latin America, inspiring the fight of sensible Brazilians to respect and protect the forest.”

The winds of the world blow; blowing
They sweep and carry, undoing,
Destroying all that humans
Onde built, things tha may be grand
But are also fragile and finite.
Not planted in the core of eternity
They´re a mere banner
Made of blood, dreams, clay and song.

Ventos do mundo sopram; quando sopram,
ai, vão varrendo, vão, vão carregando
e desfazendo tudo o que de humano
existe, erguido e porventura grande,
mas frágil, mas finito como as dores,
porque ainda não fincado — qual bandeira
feita de sangue, sonho, barro e cântico —
no próprio coração da eternidade.

A POEM CLOSE TO THE END

Death is not painful.
What hurts is nothingness
That life brings to Love.
I play na enchanted flute
And its music is not heard.
It snows in my heart<
It´s the grief I carry
For failing to be good.

POEMA PERTO DO FIM

A morte é indolor.
O que dói nela é o nada
que  a vida faz do amor.
Toco a flauta encantada,
e já não dá mais som.
Levo uma pena leve
de não ter sido bom.
E no coração, neve.

THE MAGIC OF SAYING

When I talk and my words
But I Will only understand them

When I´m hurt by their edges
First hidden from view.

Or when their meaning change
In a verse (even the most common words do):

Arraigned to describe pain
They prefer to sing birds and flowers.

SORTILÉGIOS DO VERBO

As palavras me são quando as profiro.
O que elas são só sei quando me firo

nas felpas e nos gumes que escondiam
quando a meu dom de amar se ofereciam>

Ou quando (quase sempre as mais correntes)
dentro do verso falam diferentes.

Chamadas para me dizer das dores
dão de contar de pássaros e flores.

LIKE A RIVER

         To André

To be able, like a river
To carry along
The tired boat
Unable to convey any hope;
Washing away and cleansing
The stains of suffering.

Covered by the silence of distance
To grow and deliver
The full Power of a song,
Exactly as the river deciphers
The secrets of the earth.

When it is time to decrease
The river saves its strenght
To stay flowing.
Sometimes it disappears and for a while
Its waters will run deep in the earth.
But it learns always to return
In order to fulfill its trade: Love.

To accept, like a river,
Those sudden waves
Of foul Waters
That bring to surface
The hidden truth of the deepl

Like a river, sum of streams,
To learn how to follow
And widen with others,
To finally meet
The ocean.

To change, always on the move,
Sustaining the same being,
Different yet in each moment:
Like a river.

COMO UM RIO

Para o André, meu afilhado

Ser capaz, como um rio
que leva sozinho
a conoa que se cansa
de servir de caminho
para a esperança.
E de lavar do límpido
a mágoa da mancha,
como o rio que leva
e lava.

Crescer para entregar
na distância calada
um poder de canção,
como o rio decifra
o segredo do chão.

Se tempo é de descer,
reter o dom da força
sem deixar de seguir.
E até mesmo sumir
para, subterrâneo,
aprender a voltar
e cumprir, no seu curso,
o ofício de amar.

Como um rio, aceitar
essas súbitas ondas
feitas de águas impuras
que afloram a escondida
verdade da fundura.

Como um rio, que nasce
de outros, saber seguir
junto com outros sendo
e noutros se prolongando
e construir o encontro
com as águas grandes
do oceano sem fim.

Mudar em movimento.
Mas sem deixar de ser
o mesmo ser que muda.
Como um rio.

FIRE OF THE FORGE

The moment I feel I am watever I shall be
I will know for sure that I am, for I have been.
Future weaves itself in my being
Now (when? It passed already).
Where? In the moveable center of the forge
Of present, where fire
Quivers in embers
Never extinguished. In invisible cinders,
Never cooled
Made with all that has passed away. And
The moment I feed I am whateaver I shall be
I will know for sure that I am, for I have been.

FOGO DE FRÁGUA

Sei que sou porque já fui
quando for no que serei.
O futuro se urde em mim
agora (quando? Passou!),
no centro fugaz da frágua
do presente, cujo fogo
se acende nas brasas
— que nunca se apagam —
e nas cinzas invisíveis
— que nunca se esfriam —
de tudo que já passou.

Sei que sou porque já fui
quando for no que serei.

SOFT, DUMB AND BLIND

Dead, I have chosen to be
Soft, dumb and blind.
Soft like my hand
When it reaches for your hand.
Dumb as the heart
Of a rock, thousand of years old,
Blind as the fish
That swims leisurely
Deep in the water>
I will forget everything, chiefly
The hobbling steps I took in my world
Divided with a dream.

SUAVE, CEGO, SURDO

Quando morto, me prefiro
coisa suave, surda, cega.
Suave como a minha mão
procurando a tua mão.

 A LIÇÃO DO RIO

Ser capaz, como um rio
que leva sozinho
a canoa que se cansa
de servir de caminho
para a esperança.
E de lavar do límpido
a magia da mancha,
como o rio que leva
e lava.

Crescer para entregar
na distância calada
um poder de canção,
com o rio que decifra
o segredo do Cho.

Se tempo é de descer,
reter o dom da força
sem deixar de seguir.
E até mesmo sumir
para, subterrâneo,
aprender a voltar
e cumprir, no seu curso,
o ofício de amar.

Com o rio, aceitar
essas súbitas ondas
feitas de águas impuras
que afloram a escondida
verdade das funduras.

Como um rio, que nasce
de outros, saber seguir
junto com outros sendo
e noutros se prolongando
e construir o encontro
com as águas grandes
do oceano sem fim.
Mudar em movimento,
mas sem deixar de ser
o mesmo ser que muda.
Como um rio.

THE RIVER LESSON

Able, like a river
that takes alone
the canoe that tires
of being a route
to hope.

From the clear cleanse
the heartbreak stain
as a river that carries
and cleanses.

Grow to deliver
in the silent distance
a power of song,
a river deciphering
the soil´s secret.

If it´s time do descend,
keep the gift of strength
stop not to advance.
And vanish even
underground,
learn to return
in the course to accomplish
the craft of Love.

Accept like a river
these sudden swells
of impure Waters that bring up
hidden
the truth of the deeps.

As a river, born
from others, learn to follow,
with others staying
in others strecching
to build  the meeting
with the great Waters
of the boundless ocean.

To change in moving
not stopping to be
the same changing being.
Like a river.

SOLILÓQUIO DO ÍNDIO

Perdido de mim, não sei
ser mais o que flui e nunca
poderei deixar de ser.
De mim me perco e me esqueço
do que sou na precisão
que já tenho de imitar
os brancos no que eles são:
uma apenas tentativa
inútil que me dissolve
na dor que não me devolve
o poder de me encontrar.
Já deslembrado da glória
Radiosa de conviver,
Já perdido o parentesco
com a água, o fogo e as estrelas,
já sem crença, já sem chão,
oco e opaco me converto
em depósito dos restos
impuros do ser alheio.
Resíduo de mim, a brasa
do que já fui me reclama,
como a luz que me conhece
de uma estrela agonizante
dentro do ser que perdi.

INDIAN SOLILOQUY

Streyed from myself, I know not
how to be what I was, that
which I shall never stop being.
From myself I stray and forget
What I am, in the need
I now have to mimic
the whites in their whiteness:
na attempt only,
myself dissolving, useless,
in the pain that returns not
the Power to meet myself.
Now forgetful of the glory
of radiantly living,
the kinship now lost
with water, fire, stars,
without soil, no faith,
hollow and dull I´m converted
in store of leftovers foul
of another being.
Remnant of myself, live coal
of former self, it lays claim to me,
as a light that knows me,
light of a dying star
within this being I´ve lost.

 MEDITAÇÃO DO FILHO DA FLORESTA

O que em mim faz falta
— para inteiro me ser —
ficou onde não estive,
dentro do que não tive
antes já de nascer.

Estou sempre aquém
do que não sou. Cheguei
escasso de mim, vasilha
de argila inacabada.
Onde estiver, por mais
que eu todo me dê,
sempre incompleto estarei.
No que fizer, deixo
na mesma face do feito
a marca da mão que faz
e a da mão que não se fez.
Levo comigo uma fome
que, sem boca, me come.

A fome, contudo,
que mais o consome
é a que ele não tem,
da qual sequer sabe o nome.
Raiz viva e fruto podre
do seu próprio cativeiro,
é a falta dessa fome,
própria só do homem,
de sonhar e enxergar
o centro real do sonho
latejando no chão
que dói sob os pés.
A fome não tem
de comer a diferença
entre o ninguém que é
e o alguém que pode ser.

Os dentes do desamparo
mastigaram-lhe a vontade
de ver.
Os donos da servidão
cobriram-lhe os olhos
com escamas de cinza
e taparam-lhe a boca
com as sílabas ocas
da resignação.

Quem fala, não sabe
que de sua boca sai
a palavra falaz
dos que o enganam.
Por seu olhar enxerga
uma retina alheia
que o impede a seguir
um rumo de submissão.

MEDITATION OF THE RAINFOREST CHILD

What in me I lack
— so as whole to be —
stayed where I was not,
within what I didn´t have
before I was even Born.

I´m always short
of what I´m not. Arrived
meager of myself, bowl
of Clay unfinished.
Wherever I am, however much
of myself I give
uncompleted I´ll ever be.
In all I do I leave
on the very face of the done
the imprint of the hand that does
hand by itself not made.
I carry in me a hunger
that mouthless eats me.

One hunger however
tha most consumes,
this one He hás not,
knows not the name.
Living root and rotten fruit
of his own servitude,
it´s the lack of this hunger,
man´s own hanger
to dream and see
the dream´s real Center
pulsing in the ground,
that hurts beneat the feet.
Hunger tha hás not
to consume the difference
between being nobody
and a possible somebody.

The teeth of destitution
chewed his Will
to see.
Those who own the bondage
covered his eyes
with scales of ash,
gagged his mouth
with the hollow syllables
of resignation

When speaking knows not
his mouth flings
the treacherous Word
of the deceiver.
Through his eye
looks another eye,
forcing to follow
submission´s route.

THE STATUTES OF MAN

         To Carlos Heitor Cony

Translation by Robert Márquez & Trudy Pax

ARTICLE 1

It is hereby decreed
that now what count is truth,
that now what count is life
and that, hands joined,
we will all work for what life really is.

ARTICLE 2

It is hereby decreed that every weekday,
even the grayest Tuesday,
has the right to become Sunday morning.

ARTICLE 3

It is hereby decreed that, from now on,
there will be sunflowers on every windowsill,
that sunflowers have the right
to blossom in the shade;
and that windows will be open all day long
to the green in which hope grows.

ARTICLE 4

It is hereby decreed that man
will never more doubt man.
That man will trust man
like the palm trusts the wind,
like the wind trusts the air,
like the air trusts the blue field of the sky.

PARAGRAPH  I

Man will trust man
as one child trusts another.

ARTICLE 5

It is hereby decreed that men are free
of the yoke of lies.
No one will ever have to wear
the armor-plate of silence,
the weapon of words.
Man will sit at the table
with a pristine eye
for he will be served truth
before dessert.

ARTICE 6

The practice dreamed of by Isaiah the prophet
is, for ten centuries, hereby decreed:
the wolf will pasture together with the lamb,
and their food will taste as the spring of live.

ARTICLE 7

The permanent reign of justice and clarity
is, by irrevocable decree, hereby established,
and happiness will be a generous flag
forever waving in the people´s soul.

ARTICLE 8

It is hereby decreed that the worst pain
always was and always will be
the inability to give love to a loved one
and knowing it is water gives the plant
the miracle of flowers.

ARTICLE 9

Our daily bread is hereby allowed
to bear the trademark of man´s sweat.
But, above all, it must always have
the warm taste of tenderness.

ARTICLE 10

Every person is hereby allowed,
at any time in life,
to wear his Sunday best.

ARTICLE 11

It is hereby decreed that man,
by definition, is an animal that loves
and so is beautiful, more beautiful than any morning star.

ARTICLE 12

Be it decreed that nothing
will be ordered or forbidden.
All things will be permitted,
including playing with a rhinoceros
and walking in the afternoon
with an immerse begonia in the lapel.

PARAGRAPH I

Only one thing will be forbidden:
to love and feel no love.

ARTICLE 13

It is hereby decreed that money
will no longer be able to buy
the sun of dawns to come.
Cast out of fear´s coffers,
money will become, a fraternal sword
with which to defend the right to sing
and celebrate the day that´s come.

FINAL ARTICLE

The use of the word freedom is hereby prohibited,
and will be struck from every dictionary
and from the deceptive mires of the mouth.
Henceforth
freedom will be something living and transparent
like a fire or  a river,
like a grain of wheat,
and its home will always be
within the heart of man.
